About ten years ago, Brisbane’s 4ZZZ released Behind the Banana Curtain to big, big acclaim. Think of it as a Savage Garden-free compilation of everything tasty on the scene during the 1990s.
But the lunatic asylum over at St Pauls Terrace couldn’t just leave the banana concept alone. ZZZ has gone Beyond The Banana so to speak. If the 1990s found Brisbane bands like Powderfinger and Regurgitator exploding like zits on a bland face, then the noughtys found the said face keen to exfoliate and look good; maybe even pull a root.
In the last decade Brisbane bands have made the effort to be a lot more organised and professional. Obviously, the web and cheap technology has helped but todays artists generally show more ambition than the arseholes back in my day who just wanted to blast out noise, take the piss, get their wangs squeezed and bogart the joint.
I’ve come to the conclusion that art of record reviewing is dead for the most part so I’ll just give you the track listing. Make up your own mind.
